Swine Flu Ignorance

Ok, sooo I haven't quite figured out if I want this blog to be focused or pretty much just general. For the time being it is the latter.

As you may know now, I am from Mexico, and it seems to me that this world is simply ignorant.

The reason why I say that is because ever since the Swine Flu chaos and the Mexican govt. being open to the international society about the situation with this epidemic, Mexicans all over the world have experienced discrimination one way or another.

Now, I'm not gonna go off on some conspiracy theories that exists and possible "lab results that say the virus was started in the U.S." What I will attest to is the ignorance , and undoubtedly, fear that people have been displaying towards us.

A personal example I will share is this, the other day one of my friends and I, she is from Monterrey Mexico, went to get some breakfast at a nearby place. She of course is suffering from a medically confirmed case of the common cold, thanks to the awesome variability of weather here in Colorado, and not to mention the stress of finals. Anyways, we get there get our breakfast sit down and start having a regular conversation in Spanish, she was sitting with her back to people but I could see the action going on behind her. Suddenly I see how people start staring at us and whispering to each other, slowly like flies, one by one they start to leave. Now this wasn't that obvious, but what was obvious was a family that had just gotten there. They sat right next to us and again we're still having our conversation in Spanish, then the dad kept looking at us and staring, literally within 3 minutes they had sat down to have their breakfast, they got up and left.

I brought this to my friends attention and told her that apparently we were making people uncomfortable. It was like we were the leper people in the place and others around us would just politely put on their faces of horror and leave.

On a more global scale, all over the news we've seen Pres. Calderon expressed his discontent with the global society due to the poor treatment they've displayed towards Mexican nationals. In China 70+ Mexican nationals were immediately placed in quarantine even though they did not display any symptoms. According to one of the women being held at the hotel room in Hong Kong along with the other Mexican travelers, they were immediately escorted from the airport to a van which then took them to the hotel they are currently at. No questions asked, all they were told was that it was because of the Swine Flu.

Surprisingly I could not find any American or articles in English for that matter that covered this lack of information.

Overall, I think people need to calm down. Not only because a person looks Mexican or speaks Spanish does this mean they are infected with the flu. To add on to that, it is clear that the Mexican government has been nothing but honest about the situation and taking very drastic poreventive measures.
I understand taking preventive measures in order to not become infected, but let me ask you this, why is it that Mexicans and Mexico for that matter are being tagged as the"Leper", when the U.S. is in the fact the second country with the most infections and yet everyone still welcomes the U.S. to their countries?

IGNORANCE is the virus here
